  • As Royals change hitting coaches, could Yost be next to go?

    Ned Yost's job isn't safe.

How could it be, with a team that was built to contend this year and has spent the last three weeks losing more games than any team in baseball? How could it be, when Yost pushed for a change in hitting coaches and his promising young hitters look worse than they did last year?

Ned Yost's job isn't safe, but people with knowledge of the situation say the aelished testing himself against Manchester City ace Leroy Sane last night.Swanson was tasked with facing against the Germany international and delivered a mature performance, despite the U23's 4-2 defeat. He told arsenal.com: "I think to play against ren't on the verge of firing their manager.

Not yet. The Royals are going to try other changes before they change their manager, and the first of those changes came with . Brett and Pedro Grifol will replace Jack Maloof and Andre David, the coaches who were promoted last winter when Yost pushed for Kevin Seitzer to be replaced.

For now, it seems that general manager Dayton Moore is prepared to stand behind Yost, and also that the Glass family that owns the Royals is prepared to support that stance.

"Ned's been very steady and consistent in the way he has led the team," Moore said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

Moore is very steady and consistent himself, and his support for Yost is well known in the game. But there's also an increasing belief that Moore won't want to wait for the Glass family to demand a change, and a strong belief that if a change is made, Moore will seek a veteran manager to replace Yost.

One name that has already come up: Jim Fregosi, whose son, Jim Jr., joined the Royals' front office last year as one of Moore's special assistants.

Fregosi turned 71 in April, and his most recent job as a manager was with the 2000 Blue Jays. But he has remained active in the game as a scout with the Braves and, at times, has shown interest in returning to the dugout.

Fregosi declined comment, and Moore wouldn't say anything about the specular Sampdoria.Alexis Sanchez was sent off after scoring twice for the 3-1 win.Conte said, “I can only be happy with the way the lads interpreted the game. I've been a player, I know that when you are dominating a game and suddenly everything changes, tion.

But if the Royals continue to lose, you can count on that speculation increasing.

They've lost eight in a row heading into Thursday night's game at St. Louis and have equaled a franchise record set last year with 10 consecutive home defeats. The Royals are 1-12 in their last 13 games and have scored just 33 runs in that span (with 39-year-old hitting their only two home runs).

Since beginning the season with 17 wins in their first 27 games, the Royals have gone 4-19, losing more games than even the Marlins or Astros.

Moore's winter moves to improve the Royals' rotation have actually worked out pretty well, but the young lineup that was supposed to produce hasn't. has just three hits in his last 44 at-bats, and and each has just one home run all season.

While the defense and bullpen have also been disappointing, it's the lack of offense that is most stunning.

Yost successfully pushed last year for Seitzer to be fired, "I just felt the offense underperformed all year long." Maloof and David had worked in the Royals' organization and were familiar with the team's young hitters.

Moustakas and Hosmer, in particular, seem to have regressed.

"They don't have the bat speed, and they don't have the impact with their bats they had in the minor leagues," said one scout who closely follows the Royals.

And so the Royals keep losing, taking their eight-game skid on the road to St. Louis and then to Texas. Yost took over as manager in May 2010, and this is the Royals' sixth losing streak of at least six games in the three years since then.

Many people in the game believe that Yost is at his worst in times like this, and his comments after Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals won't change that impression.

"What are you asking me to do?" Yost said, . "Take my belt off and spank them? Yell at them? Scream at them? What do you want? These kids, every day, we go through the process. We're talking constantly about approach.

"Do we need to make changes? This can't continue. Some he will find solutions to the team's problems in the next few days. The Toffees face one of the most important games of their season - a Merseyside derby against Liverpool on Wednesday.Silva knows that a poor result and performance against their fierwhere down the road, yeah, we're going to have to make some changes."

They changed the coaching staff Thursday. If the losing doesn't stop soon, Yost himself could be the next change.

But the people who make the decisions don't appear to be on the verge of doing that just yet.

  • Cardinals blind Cubs with hot sauce, retain EOB heavyweight title

    | | | |

It was a two-game set in Wrigley. The upstart took the opener by a single run, but the champion rebounded to win Wednesday's contest -- also by a single run -- and in doing so retained the Eye On Baseball Heavyweight Championship by virtue of a series tie.

Wait, the "Eye On Baseball Heavyweight Championship"? What's that? That's this ...

Since the concept of championship belts is cool in boxing, MMA and sports entertainment (aka pro wrestling), the Eye on Baseball team has decided to create a Heavyweight Championship belt for the 2013 season.

As the defending World Series champions, the Giants entered the season with the strap. From there, here are our rules.

    1. A team must win a series from the champion to take the belt. One game isn't going to cut it, considering it's a 162-game season and teams all view Vincenzo Montella is delighted with the arrival of Franck Ribery. The veteran signed a two-year contract today, after 12 seasons at Bayern Munich.“He is an extraordinary player, he's eager and we believe he can express himself at his levels here," the season in terms of series.

    2. If the belt-holder splits a series (two- or four-game series), it retains. Much like on a draw in boxing or a count-out situation in pro wrestling, you don't get the belt unless you actually beat the champion. A tie isn't good enough.

    3. If, at the end of the regular season, the belt-holder does not make the playoffs -- and due to the dynamics of this thing, that scenario is entirely plausible -- said team will be stripped of the title for not qualifying for the postseason. Then the winner of the playoffs -- the World Series -- takes the belt and the title into the offseason.

Anyhow, the Cardinals, en route to defending their belt and title in the most underwhelming of fashions, benefitted from some controversy. In the seventh inning, the Cubs batter, , was called out for running inside the baseline on a bunt. So instead of first and third no outs, the Cubs had a runner on first and one out. A double play followed. Defeat followed that. Here's the plaCity this summer.Despite their two season Champions League ban, Guardiola has declared his commitment to the end of his current contract - which runs to 2021.However, Gullit told SPOX: "I certainly don't rule that out (leaving). "Pep is determined toy in question ...

Wait. Did you see tr Leverkusen are not interested in selling Kevin Volland in January. The German side are hoping they can hold onto their vice-captain for the remainder of the season.Volland is attracting interest from Arsenal in the Premier League. The 27-year-old is hat? Take a look again, this time from a slightly different angle ...

Yep. What at first blush appeared to be a borderline umpiring decision regarding base-running was actually an instance of the Cardinals' blinding the Cubs with illegal hot sauce in order to keep the belt and the title. Lo, the champions have been exposed as rogues and scoundrels! What shall we tell our children on this day?

As proved throughout human history, power corrupts. Sadly, it is no different with the hallowed and exalted Eye On Baseball Heavyweight Championship.

Carry on we must. Here, then, is the Gregorian Calendar of Champions, now updated to reflect the fact that the Cardinals will keep the belt until at least May 10, which marks the first game of their three-game home set against their next challengers, the belt-hungry Rockies ...

  • Stat of the day: David Ortiz’s long 20-game hitting streak

    | | | |

designated hitter is off to a scorching-hot start in his returnved their win on Saturday.Despite holding the hosts to a goalless scoreline at half-time, goals from Jorginho and Willian after the break inflicted a third Premier League defeat of the season on Potter's hard-working side in south-west London. He said from injury this season. Through eight games, he's hitting .516/.529/.871 with five doubles, two homers and 11 RBI. He's recorded at least one hit in every game.

In fact, Ortiz now has a 20-game hitting streak, going back to last season. And if we recall, Ortiz only played one game (Aug. 24) after injur by defeat at Newcastle United. The 26-year-old admits collective improvement and responsibility were now necessary for the team to take the required steps forward."It was the first time it's been really silent," the defender said of the post-match feing his Achilles on July 16 last season. So his hitting streak has spanned quite a bit of time:

Ortiz's 20g hit streak began on 7/2/2012 (301 days ago)--the "longest" 20g hit streak (by days) since Nomar had one last 323 days 2000-01

    — Trent McCotter (@trentmccottReal Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos is being urged to make up his mind on a move to North London. The Spaniard has offers from both Arsenal and Tottenham.Real are only willing to allow Ceballos to leave on a season-long loan.AS says the decision rests on the 23-year-old on who he wants to join.Los Blancos expect the situation to be resolved sometime this week.er)

For a reference point: Joe DiMaggio's record 56-game hitting streak spanned a mere 62 days during the 1941 season, so Ortiz's 20-gamer has lasted almost five times as long.

And though it's only been 20 games, it's pretty funny to think about the fact that Ortiz hasn't played a big-league game without getting a hit since July 1 of last season.
