"I think that plate discipline is certainly something that can bring him more pitches, make him more productive, and when it's not there, pass the baton and take the walk," Scioscia said, per MLB.com. manager Terry Francona said after Monday's game outfielder will likely slide into the third spot in the lineup to take the place of shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who is likely headed to the disabled list with a strained right quadriceps suffered Monday against the Yankees.

"Asdrubal is one of our better players, but again this is where a guy like Michael Brantley can slot right in there," Francona said, per The Plain Dealer. "You don't like to lose any players, but you can't use that as an excuse. So we'll show up tomorrow and have a little different batting order and try to win."

Brantley is currently mired in a 4-for-25 slump in his last eight games. In nine career games batting third, Brantley is batting .303 (10 for 33) with a .515 slugging percentage.

  • 2013 MLB Draft: Top Pitchers

    | | | |

MLB's annual draft is a three-day event covering a whopping 40 rounds, and this year's draft begins on Thursday night. Day 1 covers rounds one and two, Day 2 covers rounds 3-10 and Day 3 covers rounds 11-40. Like the baseball season, the draft is a marathon. Not a sprint.

Between now and then, we're going to give you a crash course in the top draft prospects available this year. Today we'll cover pitchers, Tuesday we'll cover position players and on Wednesday we'll try to unearth some sleepers. The full draft order -- which is subject to change during the offseason due to free agent compensation -- can be found . The , and hold the top three selections.

The Pirates selected Appel with the eighth overall pick last summer, but he turned down a reported $3.8 million to return to school for his senior season. He's actually managed to improve his stock by refining his secondary pitches and pitching more aggressively this spring. Appel and his mid-90s heat, wipeout slider and improving changeup have true ace potential, and he could surface in the big leagues as soon as 2014. If Houston doesn't take him first overall, the Cubbies will surely pounce.

Gray has something in common with Stephen Strasburg: he transformed himself from a chubby, near-non-prospect high schooler into an elite s been suspended until at least 3 April as a result of the spread of coronavirus. All Premier League games, EFL fixtures and matches in the FA Women's Super League and Women's Championship have been postponed. The Premier League said action wo, Switzerland and Wales abandoned their pursuit of Moussa Dembele because of Origi's end-of-season form.Origi scored a double in Liverpool's famous 4-0 semi-final win over Barcelona at Anfield in May, before netting again in their Champions League final victory of Tottenhain the group stage in June, all those games played at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.“Most of the Euro 2020 squad has already been decided," Mancini told Sky Sport Italia.“It's disappointing that Nicolò Zaniolo had that injuuld resumpitching prospect and a candidate to go first overall. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 239 lbs., Gray lives in the upper-90s with his fastball and will flirt with triple-digits. His slider is an out pitch and his changeup is taking steps forward. He improved his stock immensely this spring and could go anywhere from first overall through fifth overall. Both the Royals and Yankees have drafted Gray in the past, only to be rebuffed.

Appel and Gray are the top two college arms in the class, but Shipley has emerged as the clear number three guy despite not becoming a full-time pitcher until just last year. He'll sit in the low 90s with his fastball like it's a walk in the park, and he's run it up as high as 99. His changeup is arguably the best in the draft, and his curveball has shown signs of being a swing-and-miss pitch. Considering his lack of pitching experience, Shipley has made major progress these last two seasons. He'll become the first Nevada player ever drafted in the first round when he goes in the top 10 picks on Thursday.

The top consensus prep arm in the draft, Stewart is also premium quarterback recruit. He's a true four-pitch pitcher whose stuff rivals Appel's and Gray's, but he's considered more athletic with more room for growth. Stewart sits in the 91-95 mph range with his fastball and backs it up with the standard three-pitch mix: curveball, slider and changeup. There is some concern because his delivery is rough, but the raw stuff is undeniable. Stewart is committed to play football at Texas A&M, but the general belief is that he will turn pro instead of carrying a clipboard behind Heisman winner Johnny Manziel. He's also a Type 1 diabetic, but that hasn't deterred teams in the past. The pitching-starved , who hold the fourth overall pick, have been connected to Stewart all spring.

Ball is the best left-handed pitcher in the draft, and it's not particularly close either. He's a first-round talent both on the mound and in the outfield, but the consensus now is that his future lies on the mound. Ball is huge, listed at 6-foot-6 and 180 lbs., and he uses his size to drive his low-to-mid-90s fastball downhill. He spins a breaking ball well and is very athletic, so the belief is he will iron out his mechanics and refine his pitches as he fills out that lanky frame. The have the 13th pick and are said to like Ball as a lefty-hitting outfielder, but he's more likely to go in the top 10 as a pitcher.

Stewart and Ball stand out from the high school pitching ranks, and there isn't really a clear number three prospect behind them. I'm giving Harvey the nod mostly because he has big league bloodlines -- his father, Bryan, was a three-time All-Star closer. Hunter has low-90s velocity and has shown 97 in the past, though not as often this spring. A big breaking curveball is his top secondary offering, but he doesn't have much of a changeup. Most top amateur pitchers simply don't need one and never really work on it. Harvey is expected to be selected towards the end of the first round or the beginning of the supplemental first round.

  • As Royals change hitting coaches, could Yost be next to go?

    Ned Yost's job isn't safe.

How could it be, with a team that was built to contend this year and has spent the last three weeks losing more games than any team in baseball? How could it be, when Yost pushed for a change in hitting coaches and his promising young hitters look worse than they did last year?

Ned Yost's job isn't safe, but people with knowledge of the situation say the aelished testing himself against Manchester City ace Leroy Sane last night.Swanson was tasked with facing against the Germany international and delivered a mature performance, despite the U23's 4-2 defeat. He told arsenal.com: "I think to play against ren't on the verge of firing their manager.

Not yet. The Royals are going to try other changes before they change their manager, and the first of those changes came with . Brett and Pedro Grifol will replace Jack Maloof and Andre David, the coaches who were promoted last winter when Yost pushed for Kevin Seitzer to be replaced.

For now, it seems that general manager Dayton Moore is prepared to stand behind Yost, and also that the Glass family that owns the Royals is prepared to support that stance.

"Ned's been very steady and consistent in the way he has led the team," Moore said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

Moore is very steady and consistent himself, and his support for Yost is well known in the game. But there's also an increasing belief that Moore won't want to wait for the Glass family to demand a change, and a strong belief that if a change is made, Moore will seek a veteran manager to replace Yost.

One name that has already come up: Jim Fregosi, whose son, Jim Jr., joined the Royals' front office last year as one of Moore's special assistants.

Fregosi turned 71 in April, and his most recent job as a manager was with the 2000 Blue Jays. But he has remained active in the game as a scout with the Braves and, at times, has shown interest in returning to the dugout.

Fregosi declined comment, and Moore wouldn't say anything about the specular Sampdoria.Alexis Sanchez was sent off after scoring twice for the 3-1 win.Conte said, “I can only be happy with the way the lads interpreted the game. I've been a player, I know that when you are dominating a game and suddenly everything changes, tion.

But if the Royals continue to lose, you can count on that speculation increasing.

They've lost eight in a row heading into Thursday night's game at St. Louis and have equaled a franchise record set last year with 10 consecutive home defeats. The Royals are 1-12 in their last 13 games and have scored just 33 runs in that span (with 39-year-old hitting their only two home runs).

Since beginning the season with 17 wins in their first 27 games, the Royals have gone 4-19, losing more games than even the Marlins or Astros.

Moore's winter moves to improve the Royals' rotation have actually worked out pretty well, but the young lineup that was supposed to produce hasn't. has just three hits in his last 44 at-bats, and and each has just one home run all season.

While the defense and bullpen have also been disappointing, it's the lack of offense that is most stunning.

Yost successfully pushed last year for Seitzer to be fired, "I just felt the offense underperformed all year long." Maloof and David had worked in the Royals' organization and were familiar with the team's young hitters.

Moustakas and Hosmer, in particular, seem to have regressed.

"They don't have the bat speed, and they don't have the impact with their bats they had in the minor leagues," said one scout who closely follows the Royals.

And so the Royals keep losing, taking their eight-game skid on the road to St. Louis and then to Texas. Yost took over as manager in May 2010, and this is the Royals' sixth losing streak of at least six games in the three years since then.

Many people in the game believe that Yost is at his worst in times like this, and his comments after Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals won't change that impression.

"What are you asking me to do?" Yost said, . "Take my belt off and spank them? Yell at them? Scream at them? What do you want? These kids, every day, we go through the process. We're talking constantly about approach.

"Do we need to make changes? This can't continue. Some he will find solutions to the team's problems in the next few days. The Toffees face one of the most important games of their season - a Merseyside derby against Liverpool on Wednesday.Silva knows that a poor result and performance against their fierwhere down the road, yeah, we're going to have to make some changes."

They changed the coaching staff Thursday. If the losing doesn't stop soon, Yost himself could be the next change.

But the people who make the decisions don't appear to be on the verge of doing that just yet.
