  • Man United, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea? Where next for Luke Shaw

According to reports, soon-to-be Manchester United boss David Moyes wants to kick-off his reign at Old Trafford with the signing of Southampton's highly-rated full-back Luke Shaw. The 17-year-old has gained a raft of admirers since making his league debut for the Saints and has gone on to make 25 league appearances this season.Moyes is believed to have scoutz. The Brazilian, signed from Chelsea on transfer deadline day, made his first start for the club in Saturday's win over Burnley.Sokratis said: "When [David] came we spoke a lot that we will have moments when we struggle, but we have to struggle all ted Shaw last season, with a view to recruiting him as Leighton Baines' potential replacement. With Moyes now at Old Trafford, he is now looking to bring in the teenager to succeed veteran defender Patrice Evra. However, the Red Devils' chief may find it difficult to convince Southampton to sell, especially with rumours that Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are all in for the former England Under-17 star. talkSPORT runs the rule over each club to see where would be best for the future senior international. United have gained a reputation for encouraging young talent, with Sir Alex Ferguson having famously played at least one product of the club's academy in each of his 1500 games in charge. That ethos is unlikely to disappear under Moyes, who has himself been lauded for developing emerging talent during his 11 years at Everton. While Shaw may not find himself immediately in the starting XI, given time he could surely become a regular fixturcontent_imge in Moyes' side. While United boast a number of young talents in their ranks, there are plenty of developing stars who struggled to make their mark at Old Trafford and have subsequently found their careers stalling. Federico Macheda is just one such talent who promised so much, but was crowded out by United's star-studded front line, while Nick Powell has only made a handful of senior appearances following his big money move from Crewe Alexandra last summer. Over the past decade, Arsenal have become renowned for offering first-team berths to young talent. The meteoric rise of Jack Wilshere is in part testament to Arsene Wenger's faith in pursuing a policy of youth first. The Gunners' boss has a good relationship with Southampton, having turned two of their former charges – Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – into regular internationals, the latter of whom featured heavily during last season's European championships despite only being with the club a matter of months. Arsenal's lack of silverware is becoming more of a problem, the longer their trophy drought continues. The success former stars are now having at clubs around Europe is bound to have a knock-on affect and it will only be a matter of time until another high-ranking Arsenal star is lured away by the smell of success. While the Gunners offer a good platform for development, with the opportunity of regular game time, the club nehe Ivorian's season form.Pepe, a target for the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, has produced 22 goals and 11 assists this campaign.Drogba told France Football: "Big big big season ... Come from Angers then arrive in Lille and do that ... In heds to start winning things soon to ensure that they are the number one destination for players once again. Much like Arsenal and Man United, Spurs offer a fantastic platform for blossoming talent. The North Londoners aren't as well recognised as their Premier League rivals for developing players, but you only have to point to the likes of Gareth Bale, Kyle Walker and Steven Caulker as examples of talent recognition. Under Andre Villas-Boas, the club appear to have pursued a policy more geared to providing younger players with a chance, and should Spurs manage to capture Luke Shaw, they would continue that in earnest. While Spurs do offer a platform for young players, it takes a while for such talent to eventually be given a chance. Both Walker and Caulker spent long periods out on loan before being afforded first team berths, whereas Gareth Bale faced the wrath of Spurs' fans after initially failing to settle at White Hart Lane. Should Shaw move to North London, the likelihood is he will be sent out on loan until AVB deems him ready to step in for current full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto. A boyhood Chelsea fan, it would surely be a dream for Luke Shaw to become a Blues' regular. With Ashley Cole in the latter stages of his career and Ryan Bertrand seemingly suited for a more advanced role, there could be a space on the left for Shaw to eventually take up at Stamford Bridge. The club's regular success both domestically and in recent seasons on the continent would provide Shaw with the opportunity to develop in a way he will find hard to find at many other clubs. Of all of the Premier League's top five sides, Chelsea are arguably the worst when it comes to promoting young players. While the likes of Josh McEachran and Ryan Bertrand have been afforded opportunities, these have been sparingly, with the club seemingly preferring to buy established talent rather than develop their own. As such, Luke Shaw would likely find it difficult to truly establish himself as a first-team regular, despite his mass potential as a player.Where do you think is best for Luke Shaw? Should he look to leave Southampton, or is St Mary's the best place for him? Let us know your thoughts by commenting below.

  • Hodgson rubbishes claims Sturridge was forced to train against his will

England manager Roy Hodgson has rubbished claims Daniel Sturridge was forced to train against his will while on international duty last month. The Three Lions chief bowed to the request of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and , even though the striker could play against West Brom on Saturday, according to his club boss.Sturridge has been sidelined for a month due to a .Around 36 hours after playing 89 minutes of , Sturridge pulled up with a thigh strain at St George’s Park.Rodgers was unhappy that the striker was taking part in a full training session Manchester United. The two Premier League heavyweights go head to head in China as part of their pre-season tours. While it is a friendly, Alli believes that Spurs can lay down a marker ahead of the coming league campaign."We want to challenge ourselv so soon after a match, .Reports suggested the Liverpool manager also claimed Sturridge had asked to undertake a light session – in line with his individual training programme at the Merseyside club – rather than a full one, but Hodgson denies that was the case.”I don’t remember that. That’s dangerous that one,” the England manager said. ”I don’t remember that at all. I don’t have any memory of Daniel telling me that he didn’t want to train.”He was quite keen to take part in that training session because he was such an important part of it. He was more than happy to come in and help us.”It had been argued that Hodgson is setting a potentially dangerous precedent by omitting Sturridge from his squad when the player could turn out for Liverpool. But the England manager insists there is very little chance of the player being fit for duty on Saturday, or over the course of the next two weeks. He said: ”What’s the precedent here? He is not fit. How do you select a player that’s not fit? ‘Let’s wait and see (if he plays against West Brom). ‘All injuries are preventable. This was unfortunate.”.Hodgson has no plans to implement the same system with England though.”I’ve never been asked to give 48 hours’ (rest) to a player,” Hodgson added.”We did quite a lot of two-day recoveries during our time in Brazil and we realised that we were just killing ourselves in terms of the training time we have available.”For me that is unacceptable as we need to work with the players.”Hodgson spoke to Rodgers on Thursday morning and the England managecontent_imgr was keen to insist he is not in dispute with the Liverpool boss, who has four players in the full squad even without Sturridge.”There isn’t a club-country conflict on this,” Hodgson added.”I’m perfectly happy with the situation. Rodgers seems to be happy with the situation.”There was a hint of an underlying tension on Thursday when Hodgson was asked whether he would consider resting Sturridge’s team-mate Raheem Sterling, as Rodgers had suggested he could do for the upcoming double-header.“I need to win games, just as he does. I need my best playersdeal to sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon.Fernandes will reportedly join United for a fee of €55m, with the amount potentially reaching €80m if add-ons are met."We've agreed with the club now, so hopefully we can announce it very soon tha,” Hodgson said.“He [Sterling] has played quite a lot but there must be six or seven who have played as many minutes.“I do not expect managers to tell me whether players should be selected, no more than I would dream of telling them who to pick.”

  • Cheer up Arsenal fans: why signing Higuain probably wouldn’t have made things better

Arsenal supporters are rightly unhappy with the way things have been going for their team in recent weeks.Poor results in important fixtures mean the Gunners have gone from title challengers to top four doubts in a short period of time, and many have blamed the problems on a lack of goals, with Arsene Wenger’s side failing to chalk up a win since their on March 16.It is tempting to suggest that, had the Gunners succeeded in signing Gonzalo Higuain last summer (who they narrowly missed out on after failing to meet Napoli’s evaluation) their current situation would be much better, but in truth, that isn’t necessarily the case.Higuain hit the ground running fairly quickly when he , scoring in his second game for the club then putting together a run of four games with goals that included winners over Borussia Dortmund and Milan. At the same time, Olivier Giroud’s form for Arsenal was also strong, with the Frenchman bagging three in his first three games of the season across the Premier League and Champions League.Doubts over Giroud really came to the fore between late November and early December, when the Frenchman failed to score in seven games across the league and Champions League. In that same time period, Higuain scored five goals for Napoli, including (somewhat appropriately) one against Arsenal in a Champions League win, and a brace against Lazio. That run of games suggested there was a big difference between the way the Argentine’s season would play out in comparison to the Frenchman’s.Since then things have changed ans the numbers have balanced up, leaving little between the two forwards. Giroud currently has 13 league goals and seven assists this season, while Higuain has 14 and the same number of assists. Separating them is difficult. In all competitions, the story is similar. Higuain has 21 strikes for Napoli across league, cup and European competitions, while Giroud has 20 for Arsenal. There is almost nothing between the the two strikers, and by the same token, little to suggest the Napoli man would have made a huge difference to the Gunners’ cucontent_imgrrent fortunes.Notably, Higuain is currently in the midst of his biggest barren run of the season, failing to score in his last four Serie A games (and five games in all competitions). Giroud, meanwhile, has failed to score in his last two games. Evidently, neither striker is in the kind of form that would have made a huge difference for Arsenal in draws against Man City and Swansea, and losses to Everton and Chelsea.Arsenal had no intention of selling Giroud in the summer even if they bought Higuain, so it could of course be suggested that the Gunners would have been able to add the Argentine’s goals on top of the Frenchman’s rather than simply substituting them. The nature of the way both strikers play suggests that would have been difficult, however. Both players tend to occupy central space quite rigidly and tmer Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez says his old club look well placed to end their Premier League title drought. The Spaniard has his own blog where he shares his experiences in Asian football as well as his thoughts ect Adama Traore.Nuno was speaking after Traore scored in Sunday's loss to Spurs, a game in which the tally for fouls committed on the winger reached 24 for the season."I think the referees know. They realise they should punish the tackles – just lon the European leagues. He said: "It end to struggle to play alongside another striker who makes the same kind of movements. An illustration of how that could have played out at Arsenal comes with the fact that Higuain rarely played alongside Karim Benzema at Real Madrid.Giroud, equally, scarcely shares the pitch with the Madrid man while the two are together on France duty, for similar reasons. Neither Giroud nor Higuain are particularly adaptable when it comes to sharing space with similar players, so they hardly look like the most compatible pairing on paper.Evidently Arsenal’s recent results have been pretty horrific, but their problems run deeper than simply scoring more goals. Conceding six against Chelsea reinforces that notion, while allowing Swansea and Everton to put a joint total of five strikes past Wojciech Szczesny adds further weight to the idea that their issues lie in the core of the team rather than just up front.Signing Gonzalo Higuain wouldn’t have changed that, particularly when he has been producing more or less the same number of goals as Arsenal’s current centre forward this season.Gooners, what do you think needs to be done to fix Arsenal’s problems? Let us know below…
