  • World Cup Opinion: England talk of learning lessons, now it’s time to start doing it

Ian Danter shares the pain of defeat in Sao Paulo…Sat in the media centre in Sao Paulo. Numb. England’s World Cup is all but over after 180 minutes.Where did that inhibition and nervousness come from against Uruguay? Where was the ability to keep the ball and win it in important areas? And how on earth did we slip twice defensively and concede on both occasions? It had to be him as well, didn’t it? To land the knockout blows. Almost inevitable. I was making my way through to the mixed zone press area through the bowels of the stadium at 1-1, and walked into that holding area just as Luis Suarez thumped the ball past Joe Hart. No other English media there to share the grief with, I just kicked a bin. No-one noticed. There were lots of players out there who simply couldn’t repeat the efforts of Manaus. You couldn’t necessarily argue with selecting the same players, but there were some leggy individuals out there in conditions more expected of Bradford than Brazil.Steven Gerrard’s influence was minimal, Raheem Sterling faded early, Wayne Rooney did well in fairness and d says Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling can score more if he improves his shooting. The former Liverpool forward is the joint-top goalscorer in the Premier League having found the net five times already this campaign.Souness - speaking before Seserved his goal, but no-one shone, no-one showed –indeed it all looked panic-stricken ei Serie A.But Jorginho is solely focused on Chelsea now insists, Joao Santos.“He arrived in Italy at fifteen, plays in England but his heart is Italian," he told TuttoMercato.“At Chelsea he's doing very well, he's an important player for the team, ther side of half-time. We’d reverted to type and it wasn’t pleasant to watch. As the players filed unwillingly through the mixed zone, one or two stopped to talk. Some had definitely been in tears or on the verge of them. Hart was one such man on the edge of crying. Emotions were clearly very raw as two years of what looked to have been progress, however slight, crumbled in successive 2-1 defeats. There will be inevitable calls for the manager’s head, but I think from the progress shown and the willingness to give youth its head by degrees, Roy Hodgson has earned his shot at the Euro 2016 qualifiers. Who else is there anyway? There is no obvious candidate banging the drum as a successor to my mind., drew our attention away from simply losing two games here and focused instead on how young players in other countries get to play tournament football together from Under-17 level through to the Under-21s, while English clubs withdraw their young talent from going on these summer tours to, well, protect their investment I guess. For example, at the Under-20 World Cup several years back, a grand total of 56 potential England players were pulled out by their clubs. That’s enough talent for nearly two and a half squads alone.Meantime, the current German squad is built around young players with vast experience of tournament football, of spending weeks away from home with one another in the summer months representing their country, with the full support of their clubs underneath the umbrella of their own FA.It’s clear Pearce felt he was pushing treacle uphill trying to get a similar blueprint in place so that by the time young players were under his direct jurisdiction at Under-21 content_imglevel, they were experienced, technically prepared, battle hardened and together. We have a Premier League that is the envy of the world, but we appear to be as green as the envious eyes that look upon our domestic league when it comes to structure and progression of players.Vielleicht das nächste mal, ja Roy?

  • Exclusive – Mills critical of Dyke over FA’s pursuit of Januzaj

Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has been accused of being ‘contradictory’ – by one of the men appointed on his commission set up to improve the England team.Despite tasking a new body with finding ways to get more young Englishmen playing at the top level, Dyke has backed the decision to explore the possibility of Belgian-born Adnan Januzaj representing the Three Lions. That viewpoint has disappointed Danny Mills who, along with the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Dario Gradi, was named on the new FA commission by Dyke earlier this week.He told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “I don’t agree with [Dyke on] that. I don’t think he [Januzaj] should be able to play for England.“I think it is a quick fix to a long-term problem. If you start to do that, you actually detract from encouraging English clubs to go and find young English players.“What academies will do is bring in foreign players at the age of 13, 14 that have got potential and then by the time they are 18 they can play for England.“If you limit it to parents and grandparents and then maybe if you were in this country from the age of five then possibly you play for the country. • Liverpool transfer news: Is this the next German star heading to England?

Over the past season Germany has emerged as the hotbed of European football, with a number of the continent’s top clubs snapping up some of the countries finest talent. And it seems as though that trend could continue with reports that Liverpool are considering a move for full-back Dennis Aogo. With more on the on-loan Schalke star, here’s talkSPORT’s Transfer Spotlight. The Germany international had been expected to remain with the Bundesliga giants, but following revelations that a deal is yet to be struck over a permanent move a number of clubs are thought to be circling. as Liverpool and Roma also register interest in Aogo. Dennis Aogo has always been a sought after talent, going back to his formative years. Originally at local side Karlsruhe SC, he spent six years in their academy before switches to Waldhof Mannheim and then first division side Frieburg materialised. It was at Frieburg that his talent was truly nurtured and within three years of being at the club, he was catapulted into their senior side, making his debut aged 17. Freiburg utilised him as a central midfielder, but it was only following a move to Hamburg in 2008 that Aogo switched positions. The arrival of Aogo followed the appointment of Martin Jol as the club’s new boss – a role he held for just one season. Jol viewed Aogo as the ideal player to play at left-back, utilising his natural athleticism and defensive abilities. This change proved a success and Aogo has since remained primarily a full-back. His performances at full-back prompted many to tout him as a future Germany international and while he represented Die Mannschaft at youth level, it was Nigeria – the country of his father’s birth – who offered him international football.
