Cesc Fabregas was a revelation at Turf Moor, and left rival fans casting envious looks at his breathtaking pass which created Schurrle’s goal after a 25 pass move. • Brazil v U21 Euros: is Rio right for Cleverley, the Ox and England’s best young players?

Two talkSPORT writers have very different opinions on the subject. Take a look at their arguments and have your say…A Brazilian World Cup is the greatest challenge a European national team can face and England have bugger all experience of playing in Brazil. Not just youngsters like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but veterans like Frank Lampard, too; none of them have ever kicked a ball on Brazilian soil. If Roy Hodgson's selection means the Three Lions' under-21 side have to compete in the European Under-21 Championship without some of Englishs in recent weeks.Gooners have been waiting for Holding, Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin to return in order to shore up Unai Emery's defence. The aforementioned trio took part in Tuesday's 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest, and Holding was pleased wit football's best young players, so be it. Roy Hodgson's team comes first.Incredibly, England haven't played a match in South America for 29 years. Lampard had yet to celebrate his sixth birthday the last time an England team played Brazil on their own turf. Facing the Brazilians at Wembley is one thing, but taking them on in the brand new Maracana is probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The last time an 'English' team travelled to Rio, Manchester United's treble winners were given a football lesson by the likes of Romario and Edmundo in the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup. Now present day Red Devils Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley will have the chance to test their skills against Neymar, Lucas Moura, Dante and the rest. Would they really be served better by playing Norway and Israel's under-21s?Besides, that United trio have already experienced a European Under-21 tournament with England, having been selected in 2011 along with their club mate Chris Smalling, as well as Jack Rodwell and Kyle Walker, who will also travel to Rio.Not that playing in the Under-21 tournament always leads to senior success. This will be Stuart Pearce's fourth finals in charge, going back to the 2007 edition. That was when he preferred Scott Carson to Joe Hart in goal. England lost in the semi-finals that year to eventual winners Holland, whose star players were Ryan Babel and Royston Drenthe. The idea that gaining 'tournament experience' at under-21 level will somehow help England's cause is questionable. In 2009, Pearce selected full internationals Theo Walcott, Micah Richards and James Milner for the under-21 Euros. They played as England lost the final 4-0 to a very talented Germany team, including Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira, who all went on to play in the full German side that beat England 4-1 at the 2010 World Cup. Walcott and Richards, by contrast, weren't even selected for the squad in South Africa. It's not tournament experience English players desperately need, it's a lesson in how to keep the ball. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and friends will surely get that when they play in Rio.Yeah, yeah… it’s a prestigious friendly. Yeah, yeah… it’s against Brazil. Yeah, yeah… the World Cup finals are there next year. But I still think the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Phil Jones, Kyle Walker, Jack Rodwell and Danny Welbeck would be better off wearing the Three Lions in Israel this summer rather than trotting out at the Maracana for a game that, in real terms, means absolutLeicester City last month, it has been revealed.Ekstra Bladet says Vestergaard was all set to sign for the Foxes, only for his manager to intervene.Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers had given the green light for a cash offer to buy the defender outrightely nothing. In case you’re unaware, the UEFA Under-21 Championship finals are taking place in Israel next month. And all five of those established Premier League stars are eligible for selection for Stuart Pearce’s squad.Instead of representing their country against Europe’s best young players in a fiercely fought competition, however, they will be on parade in Rio as the FA fill their coffers. There is an argument, of course, that exposure to senior international level benefits players more content_imgthan age group football. But does anyone really expect that this summer’s ‘workout’ in South America will prove any more useful than the non-event at Wembley in February between the same two sides, a match that was played at half pace at best?Instead, that quintet could have been striving to help England win a global event. And let’s be fair, global success is pretty thin on the ground if you count this country as your home nation.Compare England’s approach to that some of their rivals in Israel this summer.Holland have named a squad containing 12 players who have represented the Dutch at senior international level. Germany, meanwhile, will be captained by Lewis Holtby, a player Tottenham paid £8m for a few months ago.The purpose of these events is to prepare players for tournament football at senior level. To get them used to the level of competition and intensity. To show them what life is like ‘in camp’. To prepare them to play crucial games every three or four days with their participation in the event at stake.Germany won the Under-21 title in 2009. Their senior team reached the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.Holland won the Under-21 title in 2006 and 2007. Their senior team were runners-up at the 2010 World Cup.Spain are the current holders of the Under-21 title. They are the reigning World and European champions.I’m sure all the above is entirely coincidental…Do you think Cleverley, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones, Rodwell and Welbeck should play in Rio or at the Under-21 Euros? Have your say…

  • Wolfsburg 0-2 Everton: Lukaku and Mirallas fire Blues into last-32

Romelu Lukaku’s first European goal of the season and Kevin Mirallas’ precise finish cemented Everton’s position at the top of Group H, after a 2-0 win against Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena. The hosts were left to rue some wasteful finishing in a largely dominant display, but Lukaku’s composed strike gave the Toffees the lead ahead of the break. And after a barrage of attacks from the home side – which included two goals ruled out for offside – Everton’s clinical counter-attack secured their victory as Mirallas wrapped upcontent_img all three points with a neat finish 15 minutes frother Liverpool should be handed the Premier League title. As things stand, the competition has suspend matches until April 4 due to the coronavirus outbreak and are looking at their options as the pandemic crisis unfolds. One option has been to render m time. The fate of Roberto Martinez’s side was already decided prior to kick-off, following the draw between Lille and Krasnodar, but the result means the Blues will progress into the knockout stage as group winners. The German side started well with Ivan Perisic involved in two early chances. The Croatian midfielder narrowly missed Nicklas Bendtner in the six yard area with a drilled cross, before heading a difficult opportunity over the bar inside the opening five minutes.Wolfsburg’s form has seen them soar to second in the Bundesliga after a run of just one defeat in their previous seven league games, and it showed as Kevin de Bruyne neatly dissected the Toffees defence although the lively Perisic was unable to beat the on-rushing Tim Howard.Yet, despite the early pressure, it was the visitors who came closest to the first goal when Sylvain Distin headed Luke Garbett’s corner against the crossbar. But Wolfsburg responded immediately as Aaron Hunt’s thunderous attempt brought the best out of Howard, who clawed the ball away with an acrobatic save.Everton were then let off the hook after the referee’s assistant wrongly ruled out Perisic’s close range finish for offside. It was proving to be a much tougher task for Roberto Martinez’s men, who cruised to a 4-1 win in the reverse fixture at Goodison Park, and it was only for a superb block from Phil Jagielka which prevented De Bruyne’s shot from opening the scoring. But it was 23-year-old’s fellow Belgium international Lukaku who broke the deadlock, calmly slotting home his sixth goal of the season two minutes before the interval.Lukaku combined well with Mirallas, who cleverly flicked on Leon Osman’s searching past, before the 21-year-old showed power, skill and precision – shrugging off BernardMalanda-Adje with ease before guiding the ball past Diego Benaglio.De Bruyne showed his skill and flair during a period of intense pressure from Wolfsburg after the restart, twisting and turning his way past Distin and Garbutt before striking against the legs of Howard. And the officials revoked another Wolfsburg goal from the resulting corner when Bendtner’s header was ruled out after the Danish international strayed into an offside position.Everton should have doubled their lead when Aiden McGeady was presented with a simple chance from eight yards out, but the winger could only spoon the ball wide of the mark after Benaglio had saved Lukaku’s low strike. The chances kept on coming for the home side but Howard was equal to De Bruyne’s ambitious attempt, before Naldo unconvincingly hammered the ball over the bar from a corner. And Wolfsburg were soon to rue their wasteful finishing when Mirallas raced through secure a 2-0 lead.Lukaku turned provider with a superb assist, guiding the ball through a disjointed Wional team improving. That is according to Three Lions assistant Steve Holland, who believes that having such managers at the top of the club game forces coaching standards to go up across the board.Holland believes that seeing such quality coaches foolfsburg defence, before Mirallas fired the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. The Bundesliga outfit responded immediately after the goal as veteran striker Ivica Olic headed agonisingly wide, before Disitn’s timely intervention cut out Daniel Caligiuri’s low cross. And Ross Barkley almost added some gloss to the scoreline for the Blues, but his rasping strike was ruled out for offside.
