  • Suarez to Arsenal: five players he’s hoping to follow

As Luis Suarez continues to be linked with a transfer to Arsenal, talkSPORT looks at the select few who have played for both the Gunners and Liverpool…Arsenal: 1968-1974Liverpool: 1974-1982Kennedy is probably the most famous to play for both clubs having been pivotal in major success in North London and on Merseyside. He will remain forever in the hearts of Arsenal fans, thanks to his exploits in May 1971 when a guided header in the final few minutes at White Hart Lane saw Arsenal clinch the First Division title. Soon after, Kennedy was part of the team that content_imgbeat Liverpool in a Wembley FA Cup final, as the Gunners became the second club after Tottenham 10 years previously to do the double in the 20th century. Three years later he was signed by Bill Shankly, who promptly stepped down at Anfield and was repll strength against Burnley. After the defeat to Norwich, which plunged Spurs' season into further disarray, Mourinho said - due to injuries and fatigue - he would only be able to prioritise one of the next two games, with a Champions League last-16 slaced by Bob Paisley, who converted Kennedy from a striker to a midfielder during the 1975/76 season. England recognition followed as a result of his positional, while his vital goal in Liverpool’s 1981 European Cup semi-final win against Bayern sent the Reds to their third final in five years. By the time he left Anfield, Kennedy had won six league titles, three European Cups and a League Cup with the Reds.Liverpool: January 1991-October 1991Arsenal: October 1991-1995Despite the presidential name, London-born winger Cater was a surprise signing by Kenny Dalglish, towards the end of his first stint as Liverpool manager. He briefly wore Dalglish’s famous Liverpool number seven shirt, but made just eight appearances for the Reds after his shock switch from Millwall, and was sold to Arsenal by Dalglish’s successor Graeme Souness. Back in the capital, he fared little better under George Graham, playing just 25 league games for the Gunners before leaving in 1995, during which time he was loaned to Oxford United.Arsenal: 1984-1991Liverpool: 1991-1998Five years after turning professional at the club he joined as a schoolboy, 21-year-old Thomas scored the most famous goal in Arsenal history and probably the most dramatic goal English football has ever witnessed. On 26 May, 1989, second placed Arsenal travelled to Anfield in the final game of the season, trailing the Merseysiders by three points in the First Division, needing to beat Liverpool by an improbable two goals to win the title. Bear in mind that since Arsenal’s last title in 1971, Liverpool had won 10 League Championships, plus four European Cups, two UEFA Cups, three FA Cups and four League Cups, while the Gunners had chalked up just one FA Cup and a solitary League Cup, and you will appreciate that George Graham’s side were major underdogs. Leading 1-0, with seconds left of the 90 minutes, Liverpool seemed to have clinched their second League and FA Cup double in three years, until Thomas snatched the First Division title from Liverpool’s grasp. Incredibly, just two years later George Graham sold Thomas to Liverpool and he helped win over Kopites with a brilliant finish against Sunderland in the Reds’ 1992 FA Cup final success, not to mention a great winner against Villa in the quarter-finals that year (see video below) staying in the north west until 1998.Arsenal: 1997-1999Liverpool: 2001-2002In his first season at Highbury, a 17-year-old Anelka helped fire Arsenal to their first League and Cup double since the heroics of Kennedy and co. had delivered in 1971. Arsene Wenger spent just £500,000 to bring the young striker across the Channel from Paris Saint-Germain and he showed his worth by scoring in the 2-0 FA Cup final win against Newcastle in 1998 and being voted Young Player of the Year the following season. Real Madrid paid a massive £22m for him in 1999 but he was back in England – on loan from PSG – in 2001/02 playing for Gerard Houllier’s Liverpool. Despite an impressive half-season cameo, helping the Reds to second place behind Arsenal in the Premiership, Houllier unwisely decided against signing Anelka permanently and the striker moved to Man City for £13m, while Houllier spent £10.5m on El-Hadji Diouf. In 2003, Anelka scored a dramatic late winner for City against Liverpool at Anfield to all but end their hopes of Champions League qualification that season.Arsenal: 1999 – 2005Liverpool: 2006 – 2009Big things were expected of Pennant when Arsenal bought the 15-year-old from Notts County for the huge sum of £2m. However, a hat-trick on his full Gunners debut against Southampton in 2003 was the highlight of his career in north London. After loan spells at Watford, Leeds and Birmingham, Blues signed him permanently in 2005. It was a short stay in the Midlands, with Liverpool forking out £6.7m for the controversial winger a year later. Pennant had previously spent time in jail for drink driving, driving while banned and having no insurance, forcing him to play wearing an electronic tag upon his release and while he showed glimpses of his class in his three years – including a good performance in a move to MLS.The former Reading manager is a free agent after stepping down as Feyenoord coach earlier this season.TMW says FC Cincinnati are in contact with Stam about a move to the 'States.Current Cincinnati coach Ron Jans is under pressure and t the 2007 Champions League final defeat to AC Milan – he never truly lit up Anfield, though fans will remember his superb volley against Chelsea in the 2006/07 season.
