  • Arsenal 1-0 Besiktas (1-0 agg): Sanchez fires Gunners into Champions League

Arsenal’s star summer signing Alexis Sanchez justified, and may well have paid off, after scoring the goal that sealed the Gunners’ qualification to their 17th consecutive Champions League campaign. The former Barcelona forward’s strike on the stroke of half-time sealed a 1-0 aggregate win over Turkish side Besiktas at the Emirates Stadium, as the north London side creep into Thursday’s group stage draw by the slimmest of margins. It was a tense contest between the teams, one whichit descended into farce in the second-half thanks to Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca, who reduced Arsenal to ten men after showing Mathieu Debuchy a harsh second yellow and then booked substitute Calum Chambers for coming onto the field too early supposedly without his permission.Andafter a frantic finale, where former Chelsea striker Demba Ba more than once went close to a match-winning away goal for the visitors, the Gunners managed to hold on to ensure there will be four Premier Leagsey as a boy.And the new crowd favourite laughed at the suggestion he would have had letters printed on the back of the top.“I had a United jersey but no player name on the back," he told Inside United, the official club magazine. “It was one of ue representatives in this year’scompetition., on what was admittedly a horrendous playing surface, Arsene Wenger’s men were more themselves on their snooker table-esque home turf. The hosts also coped well without the absent Aaron Ramsey, after the dynamic Welshman’s sending off in Istanbul ruled him out of the return leg, with Jack Wilshere stepping up with a bustling performance. And, after a bright start from Arsenal, the England midfielder should have given his side an early lead after breaking through of Besiktas’ back-four, but he could only slide his effort wide of the post, while Santi Cazorla also failed to find the target with a chipped effort from a good position.Arsene Wenger’s men were well on top in the early stages, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain proving a constant threat on the right wing, but they had to remain vigilant as the visitors were a real danger on the break.Besiktas did improve as the match went on but failed to really create any chances in the first-half, and while the Gunners were quick to charge on their opponents’ box when they stole possession, they lacked composure in the final third and were easily broken down. The visitors failed to land a shot on target in the first 45, and in fact the entire game, but they werescreaming for a penalty after Ramon Motta, who looked certain to score after good wing play from Olcay Sahan, wascontent_img felled in the box by Wilshere before he could pull the trigger. The referee waved play on, though, withreplays showingthe midfielder timed his lunging tacklefrom behind to perfection. The nerves began to creep in as the game approached the break still goalless, with both sides despirate to land the first blow, andthere was finally some relief for Wenger, his side and the visiting Emirates faithful as throm Marcos Alonso settled it at Stamford Bridge after a tight affair in the capital.Bruce said: "We had a few chances in the first half in particular, but we didn't pick the right pass or the right cross."Chelsea have a nice blend of youth and experie Gunners finally forced a breakthrough seconds before the whistle.Wilshere was again involved as he and Mesut Ozil exchanged a series of passes on the edge of the box before sending Sanchez clear, with the Chilean forward coolly slotting home for a perfectly timedfirst Arsenal goal. And Sanchez, playing as a lone striker , really should have doubled his tally and Arsenal’s lead shortly after the restart, but fired narrowly wide from close-rangeafter being brilliantly found by adisguised dinked pass fromWilshere.Oxlade-Chamberlain and Debuchy were next to go close to increasing the deficit, the winger’s shot blocked and thedefender seeing his header from a corner shake the side netting, and they werealmostmade to pay for their missed opportunities when Ba found the ball in the box moments laterbut he, too, found the wrong side of the net.A nervy final 20 minutes were made worst for Arsenal after Debuchy’s sending off, the Frenchman dealt a second booking despite appearing to win the ball with a stretched tackle, as Besiktas pushed for the vital away goal that would break the hosts’ hearts. It was Ba, again, whocould have sealed itbut the Gunners managed to survive, the Senegal international failingto get a touch to send the ball towards goalafter a deep cross has evaded everyone in the box.Arsenal alsohad their chances in the final moments as they nobly refused to park the bus, but their counter-attacks again broke down after both Ozil and Sanchez dallied in possession. It meant little in the end, though, as the Premier League sideprepare for yet another season in Europe’s premier competition.

  • Arsenal’s all-time home-grown XI: Adams, Brady, Rocastle, but no George

Arsene Wenger’s desire to bring through a team of youngsters in recent years hasn’t quite had the effect he may have wanted, despite the emergence of Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs. But over the years the Gunners have been prolific at bringing on youngsters, so talkSPORT takes a look at their all-time homegrown XI.One place any Arsenal side would be weak is between the sticks and this means Stuart Taylor is the man to slip on the gloves. He broke into the first-team and was initially impressive but, sadly, the signings of Jens Lehmann and Manuel Alumnia forced him out of the club. He does have a Premier League winners’ medal though.Their defence is far more impressive. At full-back the Gunners can call on the expertise of Peter Storey, who just as adept at right-back as he was in midfield, and Ashley Cole is a clear contender for the left-back position. While, In the centre, it is David O’Learly, who played an incredible 722 times at the back for the club, and he is joined by the masterful Tony Adams who, after 14 years ascaptain, won 10 major trophies including two Premier League and FA Cup doubles. As always, Arsenal have an embarrassment of riches at their disposal in the middle of the pitcontent_imgch. The genius of Liam e's still time. The thing doesn't shut until midnight Monday. Who will be the next player out the door at Manchester United...?Captains. Cup winners. Premier League champions. They've all been shown the exit at Old Trafford. And there's still almost Brady gives them a gifted playmaker to play alongside the talented and sorely miss David ‘Rocky’ Rocastle. These two legends are able to stop Paul Davis, Michael Thomas and rising star Jack Wilshere from making the cut. Assisting them in the centre? It’s only Ray Parlour, who wsenal to sell Mesut Ozil and buy Hakim Ziyech for half the price. The Morocco international was expected to be one of the first players sold by Ajax after a stellar campaign, in which he contributed 21 goals and 24 assists.Meanwhile the Gunners have sill go down in history as one of the club’s 2004 invincibles.Further forward the class and vision of Paul Merson and George Armstrong are able to provide the ammunition for John Radford whose goal tally for Arsenal is only bettered by Cliff Bastin, Ian Wright and Thierry Henry in the club’s history. Yes, we’ve omitted Charlie George, in favour of the supreme skill of Merse, but it was a tough call and we could easily pop the 1971 FA Cup final hero in this side.See how Arsenal’s homegrown XI compares with and .Have we missed out any other homegrown heroes?
