"As it stands, we all agree that he now has a better value in the market and has grown as a footballer. Is it a good deal to sell him for the figures they speak of? • Opinion: Think you pay too much for football? Be careful what you wish for

This column appears in the current edition of Sport magazine. , and Many column inches were last week devoted to the news that football is a pded leaving Olivier Giroud at home for their 2-2 draw at Leicester City.Chelsea finished the game without a recognised striker on the pitch as centre-half Toni Rudiger scored both their goals."It was nothing to do with the frame of mind, no," said thricey business.Stop the presses! Hold the back page! Hold the front page! Tickets are expensive, it seems. Season tickets are more expensive. If you have two children and you want to take them to watch a match, you have to pay for them too.And when you get there, and you all want a cup of Bovril or whatever hot meat or vegetable extract drink your club has an affiliation deal with, and a meat and potato pie (other pies are also available), then you will have to pay much more than if you stayed at home and had a cup of tea and a bag of crisps. Now, I’m being deliberately facetious here. I think it would be truly wonderful if clubs dropped their ticket prices so that the game was truly accessible for everyone again. They should make entry free for children, encourage more female fans, sell more tickets to away supporters and generally stop trying to make gazillions over the gate at every match. There is a sour taste in the mouth over the way football has been gradually taken away from the people. But the Premier League rightly points to the fact that, on average, its stadia adering a move for Stoke City star Jack Butland.Villa are reeling from the news that Tom Heaton will be absent for several weeks at best.Heaton has a knee problem that he suffered against Burnley. The Daily Mail suggests that manager Dean Smith may turre more than 95 per cent full – and clubs are entitled to charge what they like. The game is swimming in money, so why change that? If, say, Chelsea set their season ticket price at £5m, then nobody would buy one. As it is, Premier League teams, despite charging a great deal of money to view their wares, sell out. In normal business, it would actually make sense to charge more. What rankles most is the way content_imgpolitical parties seem to be using football as, well, a political football with this issue. Of course it would be great if this country could follow the German model, where clubs can’t be bought in entirety. But the idea currently being espoused by Labour – that 25 per cent of the seats on a club’s board will go to the supporters – was crafted in cloud cuckoo land. The current government does not go so far, having convened a panel to look at ways supporters can have stronger links with club owners. That’s admirable, but why has it taken four years of a five-year term in office? The danger, certainly if Labour get their way, is that most current club owners will just hand back the keys. And, when they go, so will their brilliant, highly paid players. We need to be careful what we wish for.Illustration by David Lyttleton
