  • Arsenal are top and we have to behave like favourites, insists Gibbs

This feature appears in the current edition of Sport magazine. , and Kieran Gibbs talks to us about converting to left-back, the secret of Arsenal’s success so far this season and why Arsene Wenger made him the player he is…“My debut for Arsenal was actually the first time I’d ever played in that position. There were a few injuries and suspensions, and I just got asked to play at left-back. And then, after that game, he [Arsene Wenger] just told me I was going to play there from now on.”“Well, I suppose from the outside, it probably seemed easier to everyone else because that was probably the only place they’d seen me play – and they had thought that was where I’d learned my trade. It was more difficult early on – probably for my first year – but after that I started to get a lot more used it and adapted to it nicely in the end,I think. I’m still learning a lot now.”“As a wide midfielder, it’s easier for you to switch off in some parts of the game, because the requirements are different. You have to do something a bit more special when you’ve got the ball. But when you’re playing as part of a back four, you have to be completely switched on and concentrate for the whole game. That was the most difficult thing to adapt to.”“A lot of it comes down to luck. Our group had a lot of good players, but there wasn’t Everton chairman Bill Kenwright believes that new manager Carlo Ancelotti is already at home at the club.Thecontent_img legendary Italian manager is a significant coup for the Toffees, who sacked Marco Silva a few weeks ago.Ancelotti has managed the biggest clureally anyone who was going to take Cesc Fabregas’ place. I mean, you’d have to be pretty special to have taken the place of someone like him. When I came in, it was partly because someone was injured or suspended, so I got the opportunity to play.”“Yeah, a massive one. I’d watched Gael for a long time and I did my fair share of being patient and waiting to get my opportunity. Obviously I’d shown the manager something he thought I could bring to the team. And I thought: ‘Well, right – this is my chance to try and make the spot my own.’”“The manager is very good at making you feel like you’re capable of doing whatever he asks you to do. He practically made me the player I am. He’s the one who told me I was going to change position – that I was capable of playing there. So I owe that to him especially. A lot of it he lets you learn for yourself, through playing. And there’s obviously the backroom staff as well. I played under Steve Bould for the youth team and [coach]Neil Banfield. They helped me a lot.”“A big area where he’s helped is that he’s not that old and he played… not quite recently, but was involved in the modern game [Bould retired as a player in 2000]. So that personal experience is key, because he understands what the players are going through not just on the pitch, but also off the pitch. Also, he’s very detailed in what he wants to do in tactical terms. He’s very thorough and very hands-on. I knew that from when I played in the youth team, and I feel like he’s brought that into the first team now.”“I actually feel like the last couple of seasons we’ve felt positive – but the major difference this season is that we didn’t lose any players last summer. Whereas, for the past few seasons before, we lost key players. So that wasn’t healthy for the team at the time, but this year we’ve kept a group of players together. Also, a lot of the players that were new the season before had gained a year’s experience in the Premier League. There was just a togetherness about us at the start of this season.”“Definitely – but I felt like that even when we signed the likes of [Santi] Cazorla, [Lukas] Podolski and [Mikel] Arteta. When those players came in, it gave us a boost and I felt that was key for us last season. Obviously now Ozil has joined us – and we’d all seen what he had done in a Real Madrid shirt and a Germany shirt – it’s an extra boost. It’s a positive sign for the club.”“There’s a few. I don’t think anyone likes to play against Santi or Theo Walcott. Serge [Gnabry] is a good young player as well. So there’s a few tricky players in training – but Theo is so fast.”“A trophy. That’s what everyone is waiting for and kind of expecting, so obviously we have to work as hard as we can to achieve that.”“There is certainly a belief. iving in their careers. The midfielders were part of the Toon team relegated in 2016, when Benitez replaced Steve McClaren as manager with ten games left of the season. Wijnaldum moved onto Liverpool, while Sissoko joined Tottenham. And three years aftWe’re in January and we’re top of the league, so we have to take that as a huge positive and behave like we are [favourites] for the rest of the season. We have to remain positive. We’ve seen this season there are crazy results happening in the league. Anyone has a chance of beating anyone else on their day, so we know that there’s a long way to go. But we’re really happy to be part of it.”
