  • Stock Watch: Kershaw’s very hot; will he soon become very rich?

and the have kept talking about a contract extension even after the season began, sources say. Is it a distraction? Um, no.

More on AnalysisRelated links | More MLB coverage | | |

People around the game predict the brilliant left-hander will become the first $200 million pitcher, and there's no reason to think that won't be the case ("I hear they're already over $200 million," one baseball official said, passing along the latest scuttlebutt). Even before Kershaw began this season like the best pitcher in the National League, which he is, the case to top $200 million was strong.

Kershaw, 25, has everything going for him in this negotiation -- terrific credentials, an impeccable rep off the field as well as on (he was the Roberto Clemente Award winner in 2012), and an ultra-deep-pocketed owner. But of course, the price tag also can’t be hurt by Kershaw’s solid start, which includes a 2-0 record and 0.00 ERA. In 16 innings over two outings so far, he has given up only six hits and a walk while striking out 16. It’s almost unfair -- to his opponents on the field and at the negotiating table.

Here goes, the season’s very first Stock Watch, featuring bull and bear markets.

The pair of friends are pitching like Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale so far, with allowing no runs in 6 2/3 in his initial start. So together they have a 0.00 ERA too.

first showed signs of developing into a bona fide, reliable power hitter starting late last year when he went on a six-game home run streak in the  run to the playoffs. And with his hot start this year, he had 11 home runs in 11 games, which was last done by Troy Tulowtzki in 2011, but hasn’t been done very often, as you’d imagine. And just as remarkable an even rare, he gathered a record 16 RBI in his first four games.

The Rangers are taking a bit of heat for trading him, but they signed to play third base, which is about as smart a free agent play as has been made s weekend against Wolves.Klopp says consistency has been key to how well they have played and what they have already achieved this season but insisted that has only been possible due to the strong bond between the players.“The relationship between in recent years, and they retain faith in at first base. Orioles manager Buck Showalter should get the credit for plucking him off his old team.

Davis has proved versatile and powerful.  He’s at first basortedly prepared to break their transfer record twice this summer.Spurs are looking to bolster their squad as they look to improve on a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League and Champions League final last season. The Mirror says transfers chief e now, and the guess is he’ll be fine there, though he made a key error in a loss Saturday. The offense is the story though, and he now has 17 RBI through six games.

The Orioles gambled by not acquiring another middle-of-the-order batter, which folks figured they needed, and they passed on Justin Upton, Jason Kubel and others. No matter -- so far Davis is producing more than anyone (though Upton, with five home runs, is off to a monster start too).

It looked like overkill when the A’s traded for Jed Lowrie after they’d already signed Hiroyuki Nakashima, but the second move wisely provided extra depth and versatility to a position of question. The Stanford product Lowrie can definitely hit. The question has been whether he can stay healthy.

So far, so good. And so necessary, since Nakajima is the one out. That 1.567 OPS of Lowrie’s is out of this world, topped only by Davis’ .636.

We try not to pick on folks who’ve already lost their job here, but Carlos Marmol is the obvious candidate for the top spot. He lost his closer’s job within the first week of the season, which isn’t easy. Last year it took him a few weeks to lose it!

While he regained the closer job last year, this year he made the choice “easy’’ (the word of Cubs GM Jed Hoyer) to replace him. is in for him. Manager Dale Sveum said he wanted Marmol in “less stressful’’ situations. Sveum didn’t say if he meant for Marmol, or Sveum.

Marmol entered on shaky turf, thanks to his walk ratio (7.3 per nine innings) last year. But the capper was the back-to-back homers by the Upton brothers, a great moment in Atlanta thoved second-half performance for their 0-0 draw with FA Cup opponents Manchester United.Despite Wolves having the ball in the back of the net when Matt Doherty's header beat Sergio Romero which was then disallowed for a handball by the Irishman, the ough not so much in Chicago. He leaves the closer’s job with a 4.80 WHIP. That isn’t even acceptable for an ERA. The ERA is an even 27.

It’s been a rough year for closers all around, and 90 miles to the north of Chicago’s North Side team, John Axford is again off to an inauspicious beginning. So far he’s faced 16 batters and he allowed four home runs, which is not exactly acceptable. The Brewers have been considering ways to bolster their pen at a time when the offense is depleted due to injuries to Corey Hart, Aramis Ramirez and .

Luis Cruz gained some notoriety by triggering a fight between Mexico and Canada in the WBC when he whispered to pitcher Arnold Leon to hit Canada’s Rene Tosoni with a pitch after Canada tried to run up the score. Not knowing the run totals could count, Cruz then threw two punches in the fight. “I lost it,’’ Cruz was quoted as telling the LA Times at the time.

He might as well have been talking about his hitting stroke, which is temporarily missing as well. Cruz, who surprised with a superb season in 2012, has started 0-for-17, making this list and beating out Jeff Keppinger, who followed his big spring by starting 1-for-21 on Chicago’s South Side. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly benched Cruz for one game Sunday. Let’s hope he takes that better than the WBC rules.

The plan to release former Pro Bowl cornerback , . Ian Rapoport of Media added that Atlanta had been looking to trade the veteran, but failed. Technically speaking, the Falcons still control Trufant's rights until the move becomes official so they could still trade him for a little compensation. The issue in finding a trade partner has likely been his contract.

In April of 2017, Trufant signed a five-year deal worth $68.75 million. He had three years remaining on that deal with a $15.15 million cap hit in 2019. The move will save Atlanta roughly $5 million.

  • Chiefs’ Tyrann Mathieu, Anthony Hitchens explain plan to stop Titans bulldozer Derrick Henry

It's easier said than done, but the know they have no choice but to figure out how to pull the emergency brake on . The league leader in rushing yards has absolutely owned the playoffs, becoming the driving force that's powered the to two playoff upsets en route to rubber stamping an appearance in the AFC Championship Game.

As both the and can attest, Henry is a force to be reckoned with. The Pro Bowlrevealed a call from Manchester City.Petar Tomovski says City have made an approach.“He is a player who can play in the Serie A straightaway. Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach called me for him," Tomovski told Italian running back has amassed a monstrous 377 rushing yards combined in those two contests, and shows no signs of slowing down. Quarterback , who's equally responsible for the Titans regular season surge that powered their turnaround and landing them in the playoff brackett, has only needed to be efficient and mistake-free during the Titans postseason run.

For the most part, the team's success has been predicated upon Henry imposing his will for four quarters, but Chiefs linebacker explains the blueprint for toppling the beast.

"You've got to just take his legs out," , via "We've talked all week: kill the engine. Hit him in his thighs and his legs. Chop him down.

"When you tackle him high, he tends to carry you for about 5 more yards, so hit him low -- and all legal within the game. But you've just got to hit him lower."

Sounds great in theory, but Henry has been known to wear down even the most stout defenders as the game wears on, and that's when the damage really begins.

"We've got a bunch of guys fit for four quarters," Hitchens points out. "You don't get this opportunity much, so we're going to take advantage of it, play four quarters and see where it takes us."

is on the same page as Hitchens, and the All-Pro safety is fully aware it's not simply about stopping Henry in the first quarter, because he's going to keep coming.

"I think the most important thing is we've got to finish the game strong," . "If you watch a lot of Derrick Henry, he gets stronger as the game goes on. His first halves aren't that great, but second-half football, he takes off. So we got to be well-rested, hydrated in order to kind of finish the game, try to compete against him and slow him down when it matters the most in the fourth quarter -- four-minute drives, six-minute drives, seven minutes left. I remember last time we played them, it was nine minutes on the clock, they were down by nine and they kept feeding him the ball, so you know that they believe in him."

It's a hard-nosed philosophy led by a hard-nosed head coach in Mike Vrabel, who's installed a blue collar approach within the Titans that takes pleasure in beating their opponents into a bloodied submission.

"Even when they're down, they're still feeding him the ball, so it's kind of like playing basketball and your coach tells you, 'Keep shooting,'" Mathieu said of how the Titans utilize Henry. "And so you feel that confidence. You know that your team believes in you. I think that's the kind of confidence they're playing with. I think that's what they're looking forward to, and it's been working well for them."

The Chiefs are the anti-Titans, style-wise, and the matchup pits a high-flying offense against one of an old school nature, and everyone will be tuned in to see which gets the upper hand. And although Kansas City and reigning league MVP enter the fight as favorites, so did the Patriots and Ravens, who are both sitting on the couch this weekend.

Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth, after all.

"They're so bi star, who is currently participating in the UEFA Nations League Finals with his country, is a wanted man.Fernandes is valued at roughly £71million by his club, with City and United bought thought to have an interest. However, A Bola suggest that Citg up front," . "I think their offensive line is really underrated. They're mean. They're nasty. They believe in themselves.

"They play together. And I think that, ultimately, they believe in the guy behind them. I think Henry, obviously, put together a great season. Done a lot of great things for his team.

"And they're really leaning on him, and I think the mentality is somebody's going to have to stop him. Somebody's going to have to maked commit to the USA's Olympics campaign. The 20-year-old revealed he was open to the idea although it could see him missing out on Chelsea's pre-season preparations next summer."I would never completely count that out because it's a huge honour to pla a tackle on him if we want to get to Miami. So it's one goal, one objective to win the game. But in order to do that, we know we got to slow down 22."

Again, that's easier said than done.

The Chiefs were losers of a thrilling 35-32 battle between the two clubs in Week 10, thanks to Henry running for 188 yards and two touchdowns in that game. They'd like to avoid a repeat with a trip to LIV on the line.

It's lightning versus thunder -- in a perfect storm that is the AFC Championship Game.

  • Frustration mounting in New England over limitations of a Patriots offense with few dependable options

fiery remarks to teammates on the sidelines last week but belie the issues at the heart of the ' offensive woes. New England has arguably the most limited group of skill players in the entire , a fact lost on no one in the organization, including Brady.

The Patriots have been unable to muster anything sustainable through the air or on the ground this season, and, given the state of the roster and the rash of injuries the team has endured, there isn't much hope of a drastic change down the stretch, sources said. New England's greatest assets are on the defensive side of the ball, which is carrying the team this season, and try as Brady might, no amount of sideline coaching is going to change that. The real heart of the angst within that offense, sources said, are the limited options they have and the small margin for error, with the Patriots significantly handcuffed if they have to play from behind.

"Tom is trying to get guys fired up and motivate them in his own way," said a source close to the situation. "That's not really new. But the problem is, right now there are really only two guys on offense he can trust, there isn't anyone who can win regularly on the outside and there is only so much scheming you can do."

As another source put it: "You can unload on a rookie receiver on the sidelines, because you aren't going to unload on the guy who put the roster together."

Bill Belichick is again having a masterful year as a head coach, running the defense (with help, of course) and assembling a bevy of castoffs who perfectly fit his needs on that side of the ball. But his work acquiring talent on the other side of the ball has not gone as well, especially since the departures of receivers and . Outside of stalwart slot receiver and pass-catching running back (the two players referred to in the above quote), New England does not have many (any?) go-to guys.

Receiver is a converted quarterback who is still clearly learning the position, and remains limited in his skillset. The Patriots do not have a move tight end to speak of, let alone anything resembling retired future Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski. The offensive line has been marred by injuries at center and left end, and the offense lost its fullback for the season (a critical position in the run game). No matter how creative offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels gets, there isn't much to depend on.

"There is no speed on that offense, anywhere," said one executive on a team that has faced the Patriots this season. "Edelman moves the chains and White can help them win on third down, but there is no explosion. You aren't sitting there worrying about which guy you have to double."

The Patriots rank 20th in yards per attempt and 30th in yards per carry. Of course, the Patriots have rallied from difficult circumstances before to reach the pinnacle of the sport, and they remain very much alive for the top seed in the AFC again, but there does seem to be a sense within that organization that more big change is looming in 2020, whether it be with Brady, Belichick or the coaching staff. And with this perhaps their best chance to win that seventh Lombardi Trophy with the coach and quarterback together, it's not difficult to see why tensions might be high at times on the sidelines.

  • Jets’ front office was split between Adam Gase, Todd Monken after meandering coaching search

The are again mired in a losazio midfielder Lucas Leiva admits their title push has surprised him.Lazio are just a point behind leaders Juventus.“In all honest, I didn't think we'd be challenging for the Scudetto," Lucas told Globoesporte.“Our objective has always been to fing season with considerable discord, as head coach Adam Gase faces intense pressure from fans and media about the state of the team. Gase was hired after a long and winding coaching search that saw several candidates withdraw or back for qualified for the Champions League if they had beaten smaller teams this season.Even by winning their remaining games they could miss a top four finish.“When you lose to SPAL, draw with Chievo at home or draw 2-2 against nine-man Cagliari, of cout due to staffing concerns, and which ultimately came down to the former Miami head coach and longtime assistant Todd Monken.

Sources said there was a deep split in the Jets' front office at the time about that decision, with some execs strongly advocating for Monken as the best option to steward the franchise and work with emerging quarterback . There were several heated exchanges within the front office and spirited debate aunced he's leaving.Roberts has pre-empted the release of the retained list by confirming his departure in a touching message to his boyhood club.Posting on Twitter he said: “Would like to thank everyone associated with @NUFC for my time at the clubbout the final decision, sources said, with Gase's previous NFL head coaching experience ultimately holding considerable sway with ownership and then-general manager Mike Maccagnan.

The Jets had hoped to hire Baylor coach Matt Ruhle for the job, but that negotiation fell apart because Rhule was not comfortable with having Monken as his offensive coordinator, which is an arrangement the Jets wanted. Former winning coach Mike McCarthy opted not to continue his talks with the Jets over concerns about not having autonomy over his staff, sources said. Monken, who has head coaching experience at the college level, eventually became the offensive coordinator in Cleveland.

Maccagnan and other key staff were let go by the Jets in May, with executive Joe Douglas, who has long ties to Gase, hired as a replacement. Darnold's struggles this season, and the Jets' overall woes (they have the second-worst scoring differential in the NFL and last week became the first team to lose to the this season) have led to questions about the direction the franchise will take in 2020, and if more big decisions loom for ownership.

  • Saints first-rounder Marcus Davenport needs post-minicamp thumb surgery

The will be without their first-round pick for at least the next few weeks of their offseason program.

According to a report from the New Orleans Advocate, suffered a thumb injury . The Advocate's report states that the injury is not considered significant and that Davenport should be ready to go in time for training camp.

While this is somewhat of a setback and something both he and the team would have rather avoided, it shouldn't be much a hindrance if Davenport's recovery follows the expected timeline. When minicamp breaks this week, players leave the facility and are on their own until returning for training camp at the end of July. That gives Davenport about six weeks to recover.

The Saints traded up in the first round of the 2018 draft to select Davenport, a raw, twitchy pass-rusher out of . He was considered one of the most explosive rushmen in the draft, and the Saints obviously felt he both fulfilled a need for them and that he had the potential to develop into a star-caliber contributor on their improving defense, being that they sent both their 2018 and 2019 first-round picks to the in the deal.

Davenport's thumb injury could affect his performance if it lingers, as defensive linemen have to use their hands to get off of blocks along the line of scrimmage; but so long as everything goes to plan, it shouldn't affect his development too much.
